Black "Fire Clouds" by Melissa Johnson
The Navajo are known for weaving, basketry, jewelry, and pottery. Early pottery was similar to Pueblo styles, but Navajo pots were glazed with piñon pitch for a glossy brown-red finish. They are traditionally smoothed with corncobs and fired in open pits without painted designs to preserve cultural privacy.
In the 1950s, potters like Rose Williams revived Navajo pottery, bringing it to global attention. Today, Navajo pottery is admired for its unique designs and is considered fine art.
