First Corn by David Lalo
Hopi pottery is famous for its fine craftsmanship and elegant, flowing designs. The gold-hued pots from First Mesa are well-known, but Hopi potters also make beautiful red and white vessels. The modern tradition of Hopi pottery began with Nampeyo, who was inspired by ancient pottery from the Sikyatki site in the late 19th century. Her revival of Sikyatki yellowware featured brown or red designs on a light yellow-gold background. Hopi redware has black designs on a rich red-brown background. Potters use yucca leaf brushes to paint both traditional and modern designs, then fire the pots in open pits with sheep manure or cedar. Today, Hopi pottery is among the most highly prized and collected art forms in the Southwest.
