Jemez Pottery

$585.00

Jemez Pueblo potters are known for their skill and innovation, creating both traditional and modern pottery. Before the Spanish arrived, Jemez was famous for black-on-white pottery, but this style faded by the early 18th century, and most pottery came from nearby Zia Pueblo. In the early 20th century, Jemez pottery was revived, influenced by Zia designs. However, it wasn’t until the 1960s and 70s that many potters began producing high-quality work using ancient techniques. They developed a unique black-on-red and red-on-tan style, improving their skills. Since the 1980s, Jemez pottery has become very popular. Today, potters create a variety of items, including Storytellers, wedding vases, seed pots, and sgraffito-etched vessels, and are celebrated for their craftsmanship and creativity.
